Bringing Cuddles to Edinburgh

Therapy Pets offers therapeutic activities with our trained Therapy Dog, Doctor Watson, and our Guinea Pigs Frank & Elvis. We visit all types of care settings, focusing on cognitive, sensory, fine motor skills & emotional engagement. Particularly in dementia, Alzheimer's, brain injuries, stroke, autism & other disabilities. Read our Care Homes page for more of the benefits associated with animal therapy.

Our one-hour sessions are designed to provide a sensory experience for all by prompting memories, encouraging chats and emotional engagement. We can also provide activity sheets such as colouring and puzzles for you to extend the activity after we leave.

Therapy Pets has recently relocated to Edinburgh and we are excited to bring our beautiful therapy pets to Scotland! We run weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedules that offer great discounts.

DOCTOR WATSON

Doctor Watson is an 8-year-old Samoyed crossed with a beautiful (Lassie) Rough Collie. He loves cuddles and has the most loving and gentle nature. He likes nothing more than to be stroked and loves to take treats politely. Check out his puppy photo album and see how much he has grown!

Most Therapy Dogs are small but Doc is a BIG BOY! and comes up to waist height, this means wheelchair users don't need to miss out on cuddles.

He is a fantastic companion and is never happier than when he is meeting new people and getting stroked and fussed.

Doc is quite simply a Superstar!, as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside. He loves everyone, never judges and greets everyone with an open heart….if only we could all be a bit more Doc!

Guinea Pigs

ELVIS & FRANK

Meet Frank & Elvis, our cute, cuddly, squeaky, fun wee guinea pigs. Not related but the best of buddies. They are vocal, outgoing and very charming.

Frank is an Abyssinian piggy from the Incan regions and Elvis is a Peruvian piggy from the Andes regions of South America. Frank with his signature cowlick style swirls and Elvis with his trademark quiff.

During your one-hour therapy session, you will have two guinea pigs provided which can accommodate both lounge groups and individual room visits.

Residents can stroke, brush and feed both Frank & Elvis and if you give permission we are happy to take photographs for you on your camera. Our safeguarding procedures for vulnerable adults mean that we will only provide photographs for your private use and only ever repost.

We love to chat with the residents and reminisce about their pets and we bring along our colouring sheets so they can continue the activity after we leave.

How we work

Onboarding

WHat to expect

Before we undertake any bookings we like to explain our service so we can deliver a rewarding Therapy Pet session that meets your expectations, we can then confirm availability and costs, including any travel that may apply. This is usually a phone call or a virtual meeting if you prefer.

If it's our first visit, then we need to cover a few more steps as set out in our Onboarding Process which includes a Risk Assessment, Consent Forms and a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) and you will receive copies of our current DBS and our Safeguarding Of Vulnerable Adults. To deliver a safe and healthy therapy session we need to make some commitments to each other and ensure we both have the legal documents in place.
